Behavioural Consultations

When behavioural problems develop, many owners feel unsure about where to pursue help. Many will start with their local GP vet, or a trainer, which can be great sources of information. For many dogs however, a disjointed approach can mean it’s tough to get a cohesive plan together.

For dogs experiencing problems with emotional states such as anxiety, fear or frustration, training alone can be very helpful, but may not address the underlying emotions. Medications may be considered to help dogs that are struggling to learn, process or retain information with a specific behavioural plan to address emotional state.

My initial consultations always include collecting a detailed history of the problem behaviour, including training history, medical history, diet and supplements. From here we will plan out a behavioural modification plan to be carried out with your trainer, as well as considering a management plan to prevent the issue getting worse. If you haven’t already got a trainer, don’t worry! I’ll be able to give you some recommendations based on your learning style, location, and your dog’s needs. In some dogs, we may also consider a medicine plan to help them succeed.

Most dogs will need a couple of visits to continue to fine tune and tailor the plan specifically. It’s ideal for your appointments to be in person rather than telehealth where possible.
